Alexandria is an independent city in Northern VA, south of Arlington and 9 miles from Washington D.C. on the west side of the Potomac. Alexandria is rich in U.S. history going back to 1669 when John Alexander bought the land on which the town began. Much of the areas popularity revolved around the Potomac River and the ability to use it for trade into points west. The city was founded in 1745 but not without disputes from landowners and citizens over the ever-popular area that is now Old Town.
